CNY! Went back to Alor Setar and Penang as per recent tradition. Things changed again this year with the passing of my grandpa on dad's side. Wasn't supposed to go back for any reunion dinners but dad's siblings all wanted the family to get together, not to celebrate CNY, but to just be together as a family. :)

As usual, paid our respects to our late grandpa (mom's side) and late great grandpa.

After going back to Ah Ma's place for lunch with dad's side, we went for reunion dinner with mom's side. We've always had reunion lunch with dad's side and reunion dinner with mom's side... cos both sides are from Alor Setar. hehe. :)

Coming outta the closet

Yup. It's about time...

For my D70s to come outta the closet and get back in action!

Poor girl kena neglected for so long cos of my Canon s90...

So now that the s90 is in the hospital... my D70s is back! (macam terpaksa guna je. haha.)

And to polish up my rusty skills, Sayang agreed to be my model. And honestly I think she's such a natural in front of the camera! :)

She's doing much better now...started to walk already although she has to drag herself up using her front paws. She's learning how to use the litter box and doing a great job. :) Very clingy and loves sitting on our laps. And yeah, she's sleeping on my bed now. hehe. ♥

New kitten on the block

Meet Sayang ♥

She came stumbling and crawling into my compound a few days back... had a nasty looking wound on her hind leg. Took her to the vet to get her checked and dewormed. She's recovering now but she doesn't have the strength to stand up. :(

We're putting her up for adoption but also depending on how her leg heals up and if she can start walking/jumping again. At the moment her hind legs just go weak and collapse. Vet says no fracture or anything so will wait for her to heal up and see how it goes. :)

Christmas @ The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf

Was invited by Wei-I to sample the Christmas specials at The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. So I headed over and dragged Wilson along. haha. :D

Red Velvet Cupcake @ RM5.80/pc

Red Velvet seems to be the "it" cake recently and specially for Christmas, The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf sprinkled some magic and turned their Red Velvet Cakes into perfect sized Red Velvet Cupcakes! This was one of my most fav from the Christmas menu, the cake is not too sweet and the cream cheese frosting balances out the flavors well. Would definitely go back for more. Mmm ♥

Coffee Chocolate Cheesecake @ RM9.90/slice

The Coffee Chocolate Cheesecake wasn't really to my liking but only because I wasn't used to the taste of coffee with cheese... there's a slight bitter aftertaste and the cheese cake is really moist and dense. Still worth a try since it's something different. :)

Christmas Stollen @ RM7.90/ 2 pcs or RM36.00/ 500g

I have to say I've never tried stollen before. It's a traditional German Christmas cake and the easiest way I can describe it is a bread-like fruit cake. :) The bread is filled with mixed peel, raisins, almond flakes and stollen spices. Tastes and looks very festive so I reckon it would be a great alternative to a normal fruitcake for Christmas.

Chocolate Virginia Brownie @ RM12.50

Besides the Red Velvet Cupcake, this brownie is to die for! Moist, rich but not too over-powering chocolate brownie filled with strawberry jam and pistachio nuts. Seriously LOVE it! ♥

Tuna Spinach Pie @ RM7.80/pc

I'm not a fan of spinach but I can tell you that I somehow really enjoyed the Tuna Spinach Pie. haha. The pie was STUFFED, like seriously stuffed with tuna and spinach, the pastry was just the right thickness so it doesn't feel like you're eating more flour than filling. Worth trying!

White Chocolate Strawberry Meringue @ RM90.00/ 1.8kg

What's a Christmas dinner without a Christmas cake? hehe. Sink your teeth into a meringue filled with white chocolate cheese and frozen strawberries! When I tried this during the food review sesh, it didn't taste very sweet...there was a hint of sweetness and the cake texture was light and fluffy...almost like a mousse texture. I took some home for my mom to try and when we had it for breakfast the next day, somehow the meringue topping was really really sweet. :( The cake itself was still delicious, just that the meringue was too sweet for me and my mom.

#Tip: If buying this for a Christmas party/dinner/gathering, be sure to keep it refrigerated and only take it out when you're ready to serve it.

I had the English Toffee latte and it was so so so good ♥

Wilson tried the Double Chocolate Peppermint ice-blended and said there wasn't enough peppermint in the drink, but Rebecca said the amount of peppermint inside was just right. I guess it boils down to how much you like the taste of peppermint. :p I didn't try it so I can't give my opinion but I can say I enjoyed my English Toffee. hehe.

Vijay + Stef

Took a trip down to Malacca to attend Vijay and Stef's wedding, FINALLY! They've been dating for 6 years! :)

-Mini review of Tidur Tidur Guesthouse-

We only planned to stay a night in Malacca and Justin told us about Tidur Tidur Guesthouse which is owned by his friend Stanley (who is now our friend too. haha.). For the non-Malaysians, "Tidur" means "sleep" in Malay so Tidur Tidur means Sleep Sleep. ;)

Type of accommodation: Backpacker style
Rooms: Currently they have private rooms for 2 or 4, so no sharing with strangers, even if you're alone you'll get the room to yourself. :)
Bed types: All bunk beds (double-decker)
Toilets: Shared toilets, separated into male, female and unisex toilets. Equipped with hot shower.
Pantry: Small pantry with hot water provided.
Wi-Fi: Free Wi-Fi available!
Price: VERY affordable. Sun - Thurs: RM15/bed; Fri & Sat: RM20/bed
Location: Strategic. Just a 5-10 min walk away from the main Jonker Street shops. Back of the shop is the Malacca River, gorgeous views especially at sunset. :)
Breakfast: At the moment, no breakfast provided. But you're in Malacca...there's so much to eat! Cendol, Chicken Rice Balls, Nonya food, Nonya kuih, pineapple tarts, Nadeje Mille Crepe (not in Jonker, this one is in Melaka Raya and Dataran Pahlawan) etc.
Other things to note: There's a lounge area with board games and cards for chillaxing. There are also tables and chairs along the corridor. One thing to note is that the rooms DO NOT have air-conditioning or ceiling/stand fans, Tidur Tidur Guesthouse uses a green system whereby each room has a ventilation fan that draws in the cool air from outside the rooms (ceiling fans and aircond located outside the rooms). It can get a lil stuffy in the day time but we had no problems sleeping at night.

Overall our stay was made very enjoyable thanks to the very friendly Stanley Chin. He is a young local designer who designs, manufactures and sells T-shirts. The front of Tidur Tidur Guesthouse is his shop Nil Six Studio/Mlackeny Der selling his T-shirts (which are unbelievably affordable and of very high quality. We bought 4 T-shirts from him!) and the back is the guesthouse which he recently opened.

If you're looking for a simple, clean, basic place to stay for a night or two in Malacca, Tidur Tidur Guesthouse is highly recommended. And you'll be in the heart of Malacca, Jonker Street, where all the good food is. hehe. :) And if you've never been to Malacca, ask Stanley for some recommendations and he'll pull out his map and show you were to go. ;)

Hello Singapore~!

Took a detour to Singapore when we cancelled our Bangkok trip due to the floods.

Highlight of the trip was spending the day in Universal Studios...which was amazing! :D

Here's to many more years of friendship and travelling together. Love you guys ♥

-Mini review on The Hive @ Boon Keng-

We stayed at a backpacker's hostel called The Hive and chose the branch in Boon Keng because we wanted two twin sharing rooms. The other branches only had dorm style rooms.

Overall we really enjoyed our stay here, the rooms and toilets were very clean. Aircond was freezing cold and the blankets were kinda thin so we had to adjust the aircond and wear our jackets to sleep. haha. Breakfast is provided for free every morning from 7.30am to 10.30am. You can have toast with jam/peanut butter/butter/kaya or milk and cereal. Coffee and Tea are complimentary throughout the day. The staff were very friendly and helpful, there was free wifi throughout the hostel and there were several computers available for guests to use. Mine and Jacintha's room had a window facing the streets so we could hear some traffic noises at night but it wasn't that bad. We were still able to sleep through the night...except the first night when we woke up several times because the aircond was too cold. haha. The walls between rooms are pretty solid and sound proof...so although it was fully booked, we couldn't really hear any talking/laughing/etc from the other rooms. We tested it ourselves since we were worried about making too much noise at night laughing...turns out once we closed the main door (it's like a main room with two twin sharing rooms inside), no one else could hear us. :)

Definitely recommended place for budget travellers/ backpackers. Our rooms were SGD50 per room per night. All in we paid SGD300 for 4 pax for 3 nights.

Headed over to MOS Euphoria on Saturday night for the Halloween party themed "Asian House of Horros".

Overall we enjoyed our night. Halloween parties are so much more fun when people are sporting enough to dress up. :) There were a lot more people in costumes when I went to MOS in 2009...maybe cos it was a one day thing that year...and this year it's 3 days...so there weren't that many people in nice costumes. Owh well. Here's looking forward to next year's Halloween party. :D

美图秀秀 meitu xiuxiu (iphone/ipod/android app)

This is for those who want to use the meitu xiuxiu app for iphone/ipod/android. :) It's in Chinese so I tried my best to translate and show the features of the program. Not as comprehensive as the desktop version but I like using it before uploading photos to Instagram. hehe. :D

Meitu XiuXiu app main screen

There will be two parts to this tutorial (so be prepared for a long-ish post after the jump)

Part 1: Photo Editor

This is the screen you'll see after clicking on the "photo editor" button aka the red button. haha. You can choose to select a photo from your camera album or take a new photo.

I decided to take a new photo for this tutorial and my old teddy bear will be the model. :D

Once you've taken a new photo or selected a photo from the album, you will be taken to this screen.

A) Edit

B) Colour adjustments

C) Lens blur/ background blur/tilt shift

D) Effects

E) Border

The edit button brings up the following 3 tools for editing the image:

1. Crop

(center oval button is for you to set the crop ration, blue button is to confirm your changes)

2. Transform (Rotate/Flip)

(Rotate left, rotate right, flip vertically, flip horizontally, bottom bar is to rotate the image freely)

3. Increase clarity (increase sharpness)

------- B) Colour adjustments -------

The colour adjustment tool allows you to edit 3 things:

Saturation, Brightness, Contrast

------- C) Lens blur/ background blur/tilt shift -------

You basically have two options for adjusting the depth of field (sorry for the typo in the image. haha.). The one on the right is usually used for creating a tilt shift effect.

------- D) Effects -------

Ah... the best part! :D Adding effects to the images.

You have 3 categories to choose from, I'd say you should try each one out and see which effect works best for your image. :)

If you want to apply multiple effects, you have to select one effect, press the green "tick" and come back again to select another effect. For this image I applied one effect only.

------- E) Border -------
Adding borders/frames to the image.

There are two categories to choose from. Firstly the simple frames/borders.

Secondly the special kinda borders. Which are really nice. :)

Once you're done, hit the top right button to save the image.

It'll bring you to this screen, just hit the orange button to save the image to your camera album. The rest is for sharing to other social networks but I don't use those.

Part 2: Photo Editor

So this is what you can do after editing your photos... make a collage! :)

Hit the green button from the main screen.

And you'll see this. Just click the green button to get started on adding images in.

There are actually 3 collage methods available so I'll show them one by one...starting with the standard collage.

You should see this after clicking the green button from the collage main screen. You can select up to 9 images from your camera album. Once you're done just click the blue button.

It will automatically place your images into a collage. You have 10 layout choices. If you look at the bottom row of categories, the first one is a standard collage, the second is freeform or scrapbook style and the last is a photobooth style layout.

I chose the 3rd layout and as you can see, you can also change the border (more info below)...or add/remove photos.

Each photo can be individually adjusted. You can use the pinch zoom method to resize the image or click on the image and you'll have this set of edits. Change image, rotate or flip.

These are some of the borders you can choose. :)

Done! :) Saving the image is the same method as in Part 1. Just click the top right button and select the orange button.

Now for the freeform/ scrapbook style collage:

Just click on the bottom row, middle button and you will automatically see this.

You can freely drag the images to change their position, pinch zoom to enlarge or shrink the image size and pinch rotate the images. Like in the standard collage, you have two oval buttons below the images for you to (left) change the background, (right) add/remove images.

Here's some of the backgrounds you can choose. The orange button is for you to add your own image (from the camera album) as a background.

More backgrounds...

Once you're happy with it, you can save the image using the same method mentioned previously.

This is what the saved image looks like ♥

And finally the photobooth style collage...which I don't really like... :p

Just click the the last category and you'll automatically have this. :) You can move the images around and just like the other categories, you can change the background as well as add/remove images.

Final outcome.

Owh and if at anytime you click the home button and see this...it's just asking you if you're sure you want to abandon whatever work you've been doing. :) Hit "confirm" to go back to the main screen if you wanna start all over again. :)

And DONE! :D

The app is pretty straightforward I think...no harm clicking around and testing things out. ;)

Pretty pretty nails! ♥

Celine and I got acrylic nails at Amy's place! :D

I think Amy did an AMAZING job! It the first time getting acrylic nails for both me and Celine so we were very intrigued by the whole process. haha. I've only tried gel nails and it was done by two nail art students...so I wasn't too happy with the result then and never wanted to get nail extensions anymore. But now I'm in love with acrylics and will definitely go back to Amy for more. :D :D :D

Verdict: The nails feel very natural, are freaking smooth, shiny and of course very pretty. :) And for once I don't have to be worried about "destroying" my nails after a manicure...I'm clumsy after all. haha. I LOVE MY NAILS! ♥

Normally when we think of printing...

A. You need a PC/Laptop attached to your printer.
B. You need to be attached (kinda) to your PC/Laptop

In other words, to get your printing done, you're pretty much limited to being physically in a room with a PC /Laptop and a printer. :(

Now, thanks to Hewlett-Packard's Photosmart Wireless e-All-in-One Printer series...

If you can email it, you can print it.

Voila! HP ePrint...it's that cool and convenient! :D

Each printer will have a unique email address so that you can send documents, photos, etc to that device and have it printed out. Which also means, if your friends have a HP Photosmart Wireless e-All-in-One printer, you can exchange email addresses so that you can send stuff to their printer too. :)

I know what you're thinking:

"EMAIL??? What if people start spamming my printer with photos of their nostril hair?*shock! horror!*"

(okay I don't know anyone who would seriously do this...maybe Euveng...)

"What if I get spammed by emails about enlarging certain body parts???"

(Would be really gross to get print outs of these...blergh.)

HAVE NO FEAR! HP ePrint has a spam control system. :) This includes creating a black and white list to control which devices can send to your printer...You can read more about it on ZDNET.

Hong Kong Summer Holiday Pt 1

Since I've posted most of my photos on FB, I'm just gonna use the blog to write out additional information on where we stayed, the places we visited in Hong Kong and the stuff I bought. Summer sales yo! :D

Day 1 - Mongkok & Tsim Sha Tsui

My "in-flight entertainment". hehe. We took an early morning flight so mom and bro slept while I caught up with my reading list. :)

Good thing Dragon Hostel gave us clear instructions (and a map) on how to get to the hostel from the airport. Was a 35min bus ride from the airport to Mongkok MTR station and then a 5 min walk to the hostel.

Buses to and from the airports have a special storage location to put your luggage. It's also a double-decker so there's plenty of space to sit. Though I don't really recommend the upper deck cos it can be motion-sickness inducing. :(

Apartments. A common sight in Hong Kong.

This is something I've never seen before. Wi-Fi stations that can be found throughout the city. :)

Our room at Dragon Hostel. Small but comfortable. Came with a private bathroom that is really small but it had a water heater. yay. :p

I booked our room through Hostelworld.com, was a fast and simple process. Paid a 10% deposit plus a service charge and only paid in full when we got to the hostel.

Ours was the 3 bed Private Ensuite, cost us HK$1173 (roughly RM460) for three nights. They provide soap, shampoo and towels (which you can change daily), free wi-fi in the rooms, room service everyday, a pantry with a fridge, hot/cold water dispenser, laundry area (there's a small fee) and free luggage storage for the same day you check out. When we checked out on the last day, we checked out early and left our luggage with the hostel (they chained and locked it up in the office area) cos our flight home was at 9pm. So we went sight-seeing, last minute shopping and had lunch then came back to collect out luggage around 4.30pm.

Our experience:

As I said, the room is really small but we got used to it. We had to shove our luggage under the beds otherwise there'd be no space to walk. Aircond was nice and cold, water heater worked well, good water pressure. Beds were a little hard but we still slept well (I had problems waking everyone up in the morning...especially my bro). We didn't really hear much noise at night except for a few honking cars. The staff were very friendly, helpful and can speak English. Overall we enjoyed our stay cos when you think about it, you only use the room to shower and sleep in...the rest of the time you'd be out from early morning till late at night. :) I highly recommend staying here but prolly would be too small (especially the toilet) for bigger sized ppl (like my dad. haha.).

Dragon Hostel also sells tickets to Disneyland, Ocean Park, and Madam Tussauds at a cheaper price. We bought the 1 day tour from them for HK$350 (RM136) per person which included sightseeing and tickets to Ocean Park. :)

Down the street and across the road is Langham Place. Highly recommended shopping centre with 13 floors. 12 floors for shopping, the 13th floor is a bar + lounge area.

We came to Langham Place for lunch after checking in but didn't shop here as we wanted to go to Tsim Sha Tsui.

Found in most toilets in Hong Kong. Malaysia should implement this.

Heading to the Mongkok MTR station. In Mongkok, everywhere you turn you'll bump into people. Super super busy area regardless if it's a weekend or weekday.

Took the MTR to Tsim Sha Tsui, cost us HK$5 (RM2) per person for a single trip.

We walked around and checked out Harbour City (another famous shopping centre) but the stuff there is pretty pricey (high end brands).

Saw a girl using this at McD, found the case later at a shop in Mongkok but didn't buy cos I dun have an iphone4. :(

Took us a while to find our way to the Avenue of Stars. Had to stop and ask for directions a few times.

Found a spot to sit down and waited for the Symphony of Lights to start.

I'm not sure if we were facing the wrong direction or what but the Symphony of Lights was kinda disappointing. :( Just a few lasers, moving lights and some music. That was it. Was expecting sometime more spectacular. Maybe it would have been nicer to watch aboard a cruise ship or star ferry.

After this we walked back towards the MTR station and stopped by Sogo for a bit of shopping and dinner.

Bought a whole bunch of masks from Bonjour. Comes to about RM1.50-RM2 per mask sheet. The yellow thingy in the back is a Baviphat lemon sleeping mask which I got for HK$68 (RM26.50) also at Bonjour.

Finally got my hands on my own can of steam cream. :D

Was gonna die from happiness when I saw Liz Lisa in Sogo! :D

Splurged my hard earned money on a pair of wedges that I love love love ♥ (hence the photo comes with a dreamy effect) teehee.

How can you not love the details? ♥♥♥

Also bought a gorgeous lace outer wear from Liz Lisa. Happy happy joy joy ♥

Day 2 - 1 day tour + Ocean Park

As I said earlier, we joined a local 1 day tour. First stop was The Peak and we stopped at Stubbs Road Lookout but the weather was too hazy for us to see anything clearly. :(

We then headed over to Repulse Bay beach and walked to the end to the Tin Hau Temple.

Quite an interesting temple with plenty of photo opportunities. :)

Best shoes for travelling. :D

Next stop was the Golden Bauhinia Square, outside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. This is the spot where the ceremonies for the handover of Hong Kong took place. :)

Finally we headed to Ocean Park for lunch at the Middle Kingdom and to spend the rest of the day. :D

Awesome awesome ride.

We headed to the Ocean Theatre for the dolphin show around 2pm but it was so packed and hot that we decided to come back later.

I think you can tell from my face just how hot the weather was. I was melting. T_T

(and when I got back that evening I had rashes on the places I forgot to put sunscreen. sob sob.)

Chillaxed for a bit at this cafe cos the heat was seriously unbearable. Had expensive drinks and egg tarts.

Went back to the Ocean Theatre around 3pm for the 3.30pm show and it was already this packed. Insane!

Finally got some seats that weren't directly under the sun. Was still super hot and I swear I left a butt sweat stain on my seat.

15min entertainment before the show starts.

Dolphins!!!!!! ♥

The seals were adorable. ♥

One thing I really like about the dolphin show is the dolphins and seals were not forced to do silly circus tricks to entertain people. The whole show was a narrated story about how humans and animals should co-exist in harmony and how we should not pollute the sea.

Took the Ocean Express Train to the second part of Ocean Park.

Can't understand why everyone must push and shove their way into the train. jeez.

You can take the cable car down/up too if you're willing to wait 30mins to 1 hour. :p

Giant Panda Adventure!!!!! haha. XD

It is the coolest place in Ocean Park. Literally. When we got inside we were like "Ahhhh...aircond!!!!" hahaha. :D It's a gorgeous sanctuary and park keepers kept having to tell people to shaddup cos we weren't suppose to make noise inside.

After we left Ocean Park, we decided to walk around a bit before dinner.

Sai Yeung Choi Street 西洋菜街. Famous for electrical goods. Bought instax films (plain ones) for HK$58 (RM22) per box.

Vincent's brother recommended this shop, Lok Yuen Beef Ball King, located along Sai Yeung Choi Street near the Mongkok MTR station D2.

Very delicious. The black pepper beef balls are a little tougher to chew than the normal beef balls but still yummy.

After shopping around the streets and shopping at Argyle Centre, we tapau-ed some supper from McD.

McD McWings platter is a must try! ♥

Bought the two blouse for HK$45 (RM17.50) each. Clothes and sandals (can't remember exact price but it was around RM30) were from Argyle Centre which is a shopping heaven for girls. Rilakkuma car freshener was around HK$65, the rest of the stuff are from Sasa and Bonjour.

Snacks from Bonjour. Certain Bonjour branches have a mini mart inside (normally you'll only see cosmetic products) that sells snacks much much cheaper than what you find in the supermarkets or mini markets outside. The ham and cheese Pretz that my bro bought was HK$4.50 (RM1.80) at Bonjour but everywhere else was selling it for HK$8.

So yeah, there was a debate about whether we should go to HK Disneyland or Ocean Park and in the end because of time constrains we decided to go for Ocean Park. Definitely did not regret it. Ocean Park is awesome...it's huge and has plenty for everyone regardless of age. I would love to go back again the next time I go to Hong Kong. :)

Melbourne Part 3

-Day 5-

DFO South Wharf, Bridge Road Richmond

***This is the last of the Sydney+Melbourne blogposts. Yay! (throws virtual confetti) Also wanted to finish this quick before I go to Hong Kong. haha.***

Day 5 was considered our last "day" in Melbourne as we had an early morning flight the next day. :) So we decided to chillax and make it a shopping day. :D

8kgs of fresh cherries bought from Queen Victoria Market.

I seriously wish we had Pura milk in Malaysia. :(

First stop of the day was DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) South Wharf, took the train to Flinders St. and then hopped onto the Tram.

We had to walk quite a bit to get to DFO.

And it was super gloomy and windy that day. Good thing neither one of us got swept away by the wind. :))

My most fav store! :) Bought a blouse and got a free pair of shorts. Was really tempted to buy more stuff but it was kinda pricey. :(

Lord of the Fries again for lunch. hehe.

The rest of the afternoon was spend wondering around Richmond and window shopping.

We wanted to go to Richmond Plaza for some shopping BUT we totally forgot all shops close at 5pm so by the time we walked back here it was closing already. :(

Melbourne Part 2

-Day 3-

Lygon St, Phillip Island tour, Churchill Koala Conservation, Nobbies, Penguin Parade

***It's been 6 months since I came back from my trip to Sydney+Melbourne. Someone should give me an honorary doctorate in procrastinology***

The Phillip Island Tour was one of the highlights of our Melbourne trip. We wanted to go see the 12 Apostles at Great Ocean Read but had to forgo it for the Phillip Island tour since both were the same price and we were on a budget. :(

And speaking of budgets... we resorted to having cup noodles for breakfast just to save money. :p

We had some time before meeting up with the tour group so we decided to head down to Lygon Street and see if we could find some of the makan places Emerene suggested.

Graffiti in Melbourne are actually nice artworks. Unlike what we see in Malaysia. :(

If I remember correctly, this was a gorgeous spice shop. :)

This place is kinda like a farm/conservation place. They took us inside for a tour of the place.

Wallabies! Reminded me of the cartoon Rocko's Modern Life.

I know... I look so tiny next to this. T_T

There were ducklings, guinea pigs, peacocks, rabbits, chickens roaming the area.

Overall the place was pretty nice. Very lush and with a few quaint cottages.

Next stop was the Koala Conservation Centre. :)

The whole area has board walks and you spend your time walking around trying to spot Koalas in the trees. :)

This guy reminds me of Snorlax (Pokemon) haha.

Snack time! Tasted exactly like our Paddle Pop Rainbow. (I'm drooling now thinking about it...should go buy some paddle pop soon.)

See the wooden boxes? Home to penguins! :D I was so surprised when I saw these. I didn't know the penguins dug burrows to build nests. (Cos I didn't know anything about Fairy Penguins...should have googled it first. :p )

Gorgeous scenery

Seal rock. Where apparently you'll find a huge colony of seals? I dunno, couldn't see clearly cos of the glaring sun (as you can see from the pic. haha.)

Nobbies Centre was FILLED with seagulls trying to steal food/snacks from tourists.

So after lunch the tour guide took us around Phillip Island for a mini tour before we headed off for the Penguin Parade. We even got to see the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. Cool stuff. :)

They no allow camera....but but but...whyyyyyyy. T_T

(It used to be no flash photography but I guess it's hard to control...and disturbing the penguins is a HUGE no no. So they just banned cameras.)

Souvenirs! I bought a fridge magnet since the last time my bro came here he bought a small glass with penguins on it. :)

This was the observation area where we sat and froze our asses off to catch a sight of the penguins coming home. We were freezing but IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT!

The penguins would come back in small groups. One usually runs up shore, checks and runs back to the sea. Then slowly but surely they start to march up the shore and head to their burrows. SO CUTE CAN DIE ♥

There were so many of penguins waddling their way up the hills it was really an amazing sight. I did take a short video of them walking by but ain't gonna post it here lest I get in trouble. :p

I thought these were jokes but we actually saw a few penguins end up on the roads! O_o

Lucky for the penguins they had human guardians watching traffic and helping them get across the roads to go home. :)

By the time we got home it was close to midnight and so we took a cab home. Felt it was too dangerous to be taking the tram/train and walking home.

-Day4-

QV market, Harbour Town, Lygon St

Day 4 was reserved for shopping! :) We took the tram over to Queen Victoria market and then dropped by Harbour Town (Sandra told me about this place. :D).

QV Market is HUGE!

Spanish Donuts or Churros! :) Sandra recommended we should try it.

And I must say it was VERY good. :)

Harbour Town! Pretty easy to get here. Just hop onto the Free City Tram. :)

Joining the tourism club for some extra discounts. The tourist lounge was amazing! They allowed us to leave the stuff we bought at QV Market here so that we could go enjoy shopping. :)

Plenty of shops to browse around. Very different from shopping at a mall.

Dropped by Coles in Richmond on the way back home for some quick grocery shopping.

Dinner! :) Cafe Corretto was recommended by Emerene so we couldn't wait to try out the food there. :)

Top highlight of my Melbourne trip? Met up with Jia Meei for dinner. ♥ She was my bestie wayyyy back in Kuen Cheng 1 Primary School. :D Awesome awesome awesome. Was so nice seeing you babe! Thanks for dinner. Such a treat! ♥

Old school laptop

A very old Fujitsu FMV 450N/S1 Notebook that my dad's friend gave us. We could only use DOS cos we didn't have the password to log into Windows.

My bro and I used to write simple programming stuff on this when we were in Primary school. Kinda like made our own adventure story where you can pick and choose your path and see which ending it leads you to. Haha. :D

Unfortunately it doesn't work anymore. Plus we lost the battery and charger. Even the LCD screen is cracked and destroyed. :(

Not sure if we should keep it or just throw it away. :(

Melbourne Part 1

-Day 1 and 2-

Tullamarine Airport, Federation Square, Brighton Beach, St. Kilda

We arrived around dinner time at Tullamarine Airport where my mom's friend, aunty Jenna picked us up. Grabbed some McDs for dinner and went to Richmond. We stayed at aunty Jenna's friend's place in Richmond cos they were away on a holiday and graciously allowed us to bunk in their place. :D

In Melbourne, the suburbs closer to the city (like Richmond) have super expensive houses (AUD$1mil and above) that are really small. The suburbs further away are more affordable and bigger with plenty of land. I guess it's the same everywhere but I'm more used to how in Malaysia, in the city it's all high rise luxury condominiums. Whilst the landed property are in the suburbs.

Our host. haha. :3

The house we stayed at was a small cosy house with a small backyard and a small front lawn. Almost no place to park your car too. Interesting contrast from the home we stayed at in Sydney.

We didn't really feel very safe cos the area seemed kinda shady so we always made sure we came home before it got dark. Two girls walking down a block or two in the dark is a bad idea.

Everyday we took a tram to Richmond Station to catch a train into the city. Love the convenient public transportation in Australia. :) We had to walk a bit from the house to the tram stop but it was okay. Good way to burn off all the calories from our Sydney trip. haha.

The trains are comfy and clean, similar to the ones in Sydney.

Melbourne Visitor Centre. #1 place to go for tourists. VERY friendly people who assist you in finding your way around, answer your queries and help you book tours. :) We went here first thing in the morning to book our Phillip Island tour and to get some maps.

Flinders Street Station.

Took a train followed by a bus down to Brighton Beach. We were basically doing it backpackers' style in Melbourne as aunty Jenna was working so we didn't have any locals to bring us around... unlike in Sydney.

And the whole time we kinda survived on Up&Go Liquid Breakfast as well as muesli bars we bought from the supermarkets in Sydney. Saves us money and time. :)

We kept getting lost on the way to Brighton Beach. =_= We didn't know it was such a far walk from the bus stop!!! Good thing the locals were really friendly and gave us directions to where the beach huts were.

Walk until can die okay. So freakin' far. But totally worth it. The huts are so so so cute! :D

Then, out of no where, it rained heavily and we were drenched while running to a nearby restroom for shelter.

Rain lasted for 5 mins and then it was sunny again...for 5 mins before it started drizzling again. And that was basically the weather the whole time we were in Melbourne. D:

Seriously, the weather makes it really hard to move around. Open umbrella, close umbrella, open umbrella, close umbrella...gahhhhh. D:

Back to the city we went. We decided to tour the city a bit before heading to St. Kilda Pier in the evening.

The City Circle Tram. Free rides and therefore, very awesome. :D

Dropped by 'Yes' Optus to reload our simcards. The packages they have are super confusing we just told them..."we want whichever allows us to text and call internationally".

It was around lunch time and we wanted to try Lord of the Fries. I knew it's on Elizabeth St. but I didn't know where exactly. So we kept having to stop and ask for directions. Little did we know, we were on the wrong end of Elizabeth St. so we had to walk all the way down. And it was a freaking long walk. T_T

Going back to Richmond, we were tempted to get a massage for our aching feet. But Kung Fu Massage sounded kinda...er...painful. haha.

Aunty Jenna ordered some pizza from Crust for dinner.

It was really REALLY good pizza. Very different from pizzas in Malaysia.

We slept early that night cos we had a full day tour to Phillip Island the next day. Will continue that in the next post. :)

Finally! The last two days of my stay in Sydney. :)

-Day 9-

Koala Park, Pho Sam, DFO, Sydney Skywalk, Dinner @ "Home", The Rocks

Woke up with wavy hair! haha. It kinda amused me, must be the weather there. I hardly had a bad hair day in Sydney. :) Barely needed to use any styling tools, just brush and go. :)

Joyce's aunt and cousin brought us to the Koala Park in West Pennant Hills.

Kinda small-ish but I thought it was pretty nice. We were there early so it wasn't too crowded and the weather was perfect. :)

Yes, that's me... got called up to try shearing the sheep. Very...er...interesting and scary experience. haha.

For lunch, we went to this Vietnamese restaurant called Pho Sam to try some Vietnamese beef noodles.

Nasi Goreng (Malaysian Style)!!! haha. Didn't try that, look at the price! AUD$11.50...about RM36. siao. XD

Spring Rolls. Yummy but has to go with the sauce for a better "kick". haha.

Beef noodles! :) First time trying so I wasn't used to the flavour at first...after a few more bites it tasted pretty yummilicious. :) The beef comes raw so you have to push it into the soup and let it cook.

SHOPPING TIME @ Direct Factory Outlet.

I MISS THIS PLACE SO SO SO MUCH! T^T

Shopping at Cotton On. Got some really cheap sunnies there. About AUD$2 to AUD$5 per pair. :D

Later that evening, Joyce's cousin and her husband took us out for a night about town. :) They even bought us tickets to go for the Sydney Skywalk @ Sydney Tower! They're such a sweet couple. ♥

Excited to check out the Sydney Tower. :)

The spectacular view from the top! It has a panoramic view and you can walk around taking pictures or look through the binoculars.

Putting on the jumpsuits for the Skywalk. They gave us lockers to put our bags, shoes, camera, jewelry and basically anything that could potentially drop when we are out on the platform.

We had to put on harnesses and safety equipment. There were two platforms where you can basically see a 360 view of Sydney. The views from the platforms were seriously breathtaking. We got the sunset view which was gorgeous. They have night walks and sunrise walks as well. :)

Every team goes with a tour guide who points out places of interest in Sydney and tells you some interesting stories. Like how a shopping cart ended up on top of the Harbour Bridge thanks to some drunk boys. hahaha.

They kept making us jump up and down on the platform. To assure us the glass won't break under our weight, our tour guide told us that the entire team from the Biggest Loser have jumped on the platform. :)

Since we couldn't bring our cameras along, they took photos for us as a whole group (from one angle) and individually from 3 different angles (as in together with who you came with). Then we had to buy the CD. (expected lah. hahaha.) You can buy prints as well but we figured we might as well buy one CD, share the cost and just burn another copy. :) It was money well spent. How often do we get to do this anyway? :)

This was at Central Station. During the night they project colorful images onto the building. :)

Breakfast!!! Complete with a lame face. haha. The sliced up ham was very tasty btw. :D

We had ham + toast + fruits + cake for breakfast. HOW TO NOT PUT ON WEIGHT??? hahaha.

ANZAC biscuits. Nice! Very chewy and soft.

I miss his handsome face. ♥

I really miss shopping at BigW, Woolies, Coles and all the dollar stores. They have the coolest stuff.

Typo, brand under Cotton On. They sell very nice stationary. :)

Dessert before leaving for the airport. Christmas Pudding ice-cream. SERIOUSLY very delicious. ♥

Our wonderful wonderful wonderful hosts. We are eternally grateful for everything Joyce's aunt, uncle and cousins have done for us during our stay in Sydney. It was an awesome 9 days in Sydney and we loved every bit of it.♥

Next up: Melbourne! :)

Weekend Projects #2

Random small projects done last weekend. :)

Tutorial here: Skip To My Lou

Really really really easy to make! And it's a great project for any scrap/ remnant fabric you have lying around. :) I think it would be great as a small gift as well...or for wedding favors. :)

Used leftover fabric from making mom's bag for this. Bought the purse spring frames from Daiso.. 2 in a pack for RM5. :) It looks like the one used here: Lostlessness

Made some Chicken Pie that became my breakfast for a few days. LOL. (I ziplocked and freezed them, then thaw and pop em into the oven to reheat.) Recipe I used was from here: My Culinary Journal. But I didn't really follow it (except for the dough recipe), I pretty much made my own gravy since you can basically put in whatever you like...and I substituted water for chicken stock :)

I was trying to see if I could use my toaster as a temporary oven since my oven died last year and I haven't been able to replace it. Turns out the toaster works but the heat is really uneven so I had to rotate the position of the pies in order for them to cook and brown evenly. haih. I guess it's better than not being able to bake at all. :)

I also made another handbag for myself but it was a bit of a disaster. Will post it up another time. :P

美图秀秀 meitu xiuxiu photo editor

So I happen to only just learn about this free photo editor through Yasmine's blog. She's a DIY queen and has gorgeous photos on her blog. NOW I KNOW WHY! hahaha. Kidding, she's got an eye for photography. ;)

Anyway, 美图秀秀 (meitu xiuxiu) is a Chinese photo editor that's quite versatile and can make your photos really pretty. You can smoothen your skin, add effects, slim your face/body, add cute stickers and so on. Examples taken from the website:

I've been exploring it for a while now and it's pretty fun to use. :) So I thought, oklah...since I have friends who don't know Chinese and might wanna use this program... (not that I'm very good lah...half-past-six only.) I decided to put up a simple step-by-step installation guide so that you won't accidentally install add on softwares. :D Installation guide + mini overview of the photo editor after the jump.

♥How to download and install meitu xiu xiu♥

Step 1: Go to http://xiuxiu.meitu.com/

Click on the yellow box to download the installer.

Update: This is what the homepage looks like now:

Don't worry, both the green and orange buttons are download links. The difference is the version of the program. Look under the buttons and you'll see the "release date", so it's up to you whichever version you'd like to download. :) The one in this tutorial is an older version so it might look different. I can't keep up with all the updates they make. Sorry bout that...haha. :p

Step 2: Once downloaded, run the setup.exe file and you'll see the screenshot below. Click the button with a lot of words to proceed to install the program.

Step 3: Choose your preferred directory and then click the middle button to install.

Step 4: Uncheck all of these. If I'm not mistaken, it installs some sorta anti-virus program. Click the center button to proceed.

Step 5: Uncheck the 2nd box. That one makes hao222.com your homepage. Click the center button to finish the installation.

Ta-dah! :)

This is what the program interface looks like. Click on the yellow button to open an image and start editing.

UPDATE - 16Jan2012

How to uninstall the 360 Antivirus program that came with Meitu Xiu Xiu?

A lot of you have been asking me how to uninstall the Meitu 360 Antivirus program, I personally did not install that program so it's hard for me to assist you. However, Anne had this problem and sent me a screenshot which I will now show you and what you should do. If you can manage to reach the screenshot below, you can uninstall the program by selecting the LAST option.

I've listed down the rough translations for all the options so you know what you're doing. Look out for the word 卸載 or 卸载 which means "uninstall".

This should work for those having this problem. When installing, do follow my guide and you should be fine. :)

♥Overview/ mini tutorial of meitu xiuxiu♥

To be honest, you can pretty much explore the program on your own without worrying too much about how to use it. :) So I'm just going to explain what some of the important buttons are and how to navigate around. You can click on some of the images for a bigger image.

So once you've click the yellow button that says "打开一张图片", go ahead and select an image you want to edit. If your file is big, you might end up seeing this pop-up message:

It says your file size is too big and asks if you want to shrink it to an optimum size. Clicking the yellow button means YES (the program will resize your image for you), clicking the grey button means NO. You can choose to resize your image manually later on. I'll show you which button it is later.

So once your photo is opened, this is the layout you'll see. Tabs + menu on top, options on the left and right. By default the first tab is selected. To the right you can see some options to add photo/ lomo effects to your picture. Selecting a lomo effect applies it to your image, you have to "undo" it before you can try another effect.

This is the main menu (top right):

Open (an image)
Save
New canvas (this closes the image you're editing)
Selection tool (you will have 3 options, swipe to auto select, draw out your selection area, use circle/square/rounded square marquee tools)
Flip/Rotate
Crop (you can also make rounded edges to your crop)
Resize (manually resize your image...there are preset sizes available as well)
Freehand drawing tool (a brush where you can select colours and draw anywhere on the image)
Take a picture (using webcam)

Some important things to remember:

Undo and Redo are self explanatory. Clicking "Original Pic" reverts all changes. Compare will show you the before and after. You can choose to save the before and after picture as well. Preview shows you the end result. As some of the stickers and text are animated, you can only see the animation when you click preview. In the preview screen, there's the option to save your work.

A few other important things that you will need to know while editing your photo(s):

This is the most important tab (especially for girls. haha.) You can easily explore the other tabs on your own.

This tab is the beautify tab, other tabs include adding stickers, text, frames etc.

The liquify tool is the same as the one in Photoshop. You can use this to make your face slimmer, body slimmer, boobs bigger etc etc. The remove blemishes tool is the one you can use to smoothen out your skin texture.

Once you're done editing, click the save button in the main menu. You'll see this pop-up with a few options for you to choose.

A - Select this if you want to save your work as a still image (jpg)

B - Select this to save your work as a moving image (gif)

C - Click this to change the directory/folder to save your image

D - Change file name/ file format

E - First button is "Save", second "Save As", third button "Cancel"

Occasionally, you'll also see this pop-up window:

Don't panic! haha. Usually it will appear when you close the program, when you open a new canvas or when you open a new image. So just select "Save" if you have not saved your edited photo, or "Don't Save" and it'll close whatever photo is open. Simple. :)

DONE! ♥

Hope this helps. The rest of the program shouldn't be hard to explore...if there's no "Cancel" button to click, click the top right "X" button. It will usually bring you back to the main editing area. :)

Weekend Sewing Project #1

I have an extremely horrible habit of getting itchy fingers whenever I'm bogged down with work. It's been like this since I was really young. Every time I have exams/ too much homework/ assignments, I end up taking a few hours off to indulge in some project. haha. My way of escaping reality. :) Which was what happened this weekend. haha.

A few months back I got into a "I wanna learn how to sew" phase so I ended up buying some fabric and sewing stuff with the intention of making my mom a bag to replace her old denim "marketing" bag. Marketing as in going to the morning market to buy groceries. hehe. So I finally made her a shoulder bag with a zipped top. Couldn't find any patterns online so I decided to just wing it. Didn't turn out as nice as I hoped...but okaylah, since the only other thing I've sewn is a pillow case and some small plushies. hahaha.

The cheapo travel pillow I bought in Aussie seems to have sprung a leak so I decided to make my own travel pillow. It's filled with cotton so it's really nice and firm. Not very portable compared to the air-filled type but it should be fine to just bring it along when I go travelling middle of this year. :) (mom is asking me to make her one too. hehe.)

Owh and I added a simple inner pocket for my mom to put her phone. Took me a while to figure it out. I think I sewed the lining on wrongly but who cares. I'll try again next time. Starting to get the hang of using the sewing machine. yay. :D

Even the lucky draw prizes had me and my cousins hoping we wouldn't get any of it. Vouchers for the restaurant in the hotel? Come on lahhh. At least last year they gave out really nice prizes.

CNY Shopping + Stage Cosmetics mini splurge

Daryl dragged me up from my wonderful slumber and made me go Midvalley with him to shop for CNY clothes. It was so hard to get up...the rain + cold weather made me wanna snuggle in bed longer. :( And yeah, was wearing gray to match the gloomy weather. :)

Gardens has gorgeous peacocks as part of their CNY deco this year. Good thing we left the house at 10.30am...we were only caught in a minor jam going towards PJ and we were able to find parking in The Gardens pretty quick.

I was about to burst out laughing at Daryl's expression. We wore matching colours today. :D

So after buying Daryl's CNY clothes we went over to Midvalley to just look see look see. I dropped by Stage because I heard (can't remember who I heard from) that they were having some RM18 sale going on. :D

And yes I had a mini splurge. haha.

Thanks to the sales, I bought stuff worth RM221 for RM70!!!! What a steal! :D

Stage Wondergloss Lipgloss in 08 Narcissus. RM18 (N/P: RM55)

It's very very shiny which makes my lips even fuller. I have to be careful about how much I apply cos it tends to get on my teeth. I'd prolly use this gloss over a lipstick, just to add some highlights to my lips. Colour is pretty intense for a lipgloss and it doesn't feel too sticky. :) I might go back for other colours before the promo ends cos I don't think I wanna pay RM55 for a lipgloss. (I'm kiam siap. haha.)

This one I bought as a gift for my mom. It's more her colour than mine. I prefer lighter colours. Swatched it after she tried it on. haha. It's slightly more intense/darker than in this photo.

Ahhhh, now this is more my colour. hahaha. Soft, sweet and natural. :D I love this colour! It closely matches my natural lip colour but makes it brighter. I tend to have pale lips so this gives it some colour. :)

Stage Nail Color in 03 Pretty. RM8 (N/P: RM35)

Took the opportunity to get new nail polish as my Elianto ones were drying up already. This colour is more of a pink than peach... like a dark pink with hints of peach. I guess it looks peachy in bright lighting (lol) but more pinkish in darker lighting.

Saw Plue try on red polish for her toe nails and it looked so nice! I'm not daring enough to try a bright red colour so I opted for a different shade of red. Still a vast difference from my usual preference for pink/nude/soft pastel colours. Aiyah, CNY mah...must use "ong" colours! :D Gonna go convince my mom to let me paint her toe nails red as well. hehe.

1st Threading @ Apronbay

Honestly I haven't shaped my eyebrows in months...or maybe it's been a year. haha. I don't really like shaping my eyebrows cos I don't really have nice thick eyebrows...so I get worried my eyebrows might one day go bald (*touch wood*).

And if they do, I'd have to draw in my eyebrows...so I might end up looking like this:

And actually, I think I can get away with not shaping my eyebrows. It's not really obvious in photos cos my fringe covers 2/3 of my eyebrows. haha. But it's really ugly if you see me in person... darn it.

My childhood friend Jia Meei has really nicely shaped eyebrows and I remember her telling me she does threading and gets it done in some Indian beauty shop in Bangsar. I'm not familiar with Bangsar so I never found the place she did hers. boo. :(

Then I read Connie's blog about her experience at this place called Apronbay. So I thought, okay, I shall try it for myself.

On hindsight, prolly not a very good idea to do things like this just a few days before CNY.

Checked out Apronbay's FB page and called up to make an appointment. The place is pretty easy to find, directly opposite the Delicious end of Bangsar Village II (sounds wrong but owh well. :P) and same row as PappaRich.

It's got a nice simple ambiance.

A cuppa tea while I fill in a declaration form (medical illness, skin problems etc.).

The doors to the rooms are pretty cool. :)

The whole threading process took around 10mins. Very fast and, for me (moderately high tolerance for pain), totally painless. :) All I felt was a teeny little prick. I think plucking with tweezers is far more painful.

Before - messy, unkempt eyebrows.

After - Neat, natural and clean brows. SWEET!

Only thing is, it's a little thinner than what I asked for but it's still okay cos it looks pretty natural. :) Owh and you can see the redness around the area, that's very normal for me cos I have very sensitive skin. The "after" picture was taken about 45mins after I left the place (a lot less red and itchy than when I first left the place, kinda looked like my eyebrows were attacked by mozzies). Took another half an hour or so for it to be back to normal.

I'd definitely go back again if I need to shape my eyebrows. :)

Threading cost me RM12, I heard that it's usually RM5 or something at those Indian beauty shops. It's still affordable for me considering I don't shape my eyebrows that often. After this, I'll just have to pluck out stray hairs on my own so my next threading session would be months away. :)
